Volunteer Coordinator

BASIC FUNCTION:
Under general direction a volunteer coordinator is responsible for the assessment of volunteer opportunities and recruitment, screening, placement and training of volunteers keeping all related materials updated and accessible. The Volunteer Coordinator also assists the Director of Education in directing the overall education mission and associated educational programs of the Kansas City Zoo.

Responsibilities ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assists the Director of Education in coordinating the implementation of the Zoo's Education Mission and Strategic Plan.

Delivers volunteer orientation, training and programming specific to staffing needs.
Directs and monitors the daily activities of the volunteer staff. Evaluates volunteer contributions and makes assignment adjustments based upon evaluations. Retains valuable volunteers using rewards and recognition. Assists in writing and delivering volunteer communications. Maintains volunteer records. Assists in the preparation of monthly and annual reports on programmatic accomplishments and numbers. Performs other duties that may be assigned from time to time by the Director of Education.


PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Position requires the ability to move about easily among various venues, both in and out of doors. Occasional lifting of 40 to 50 pounds is required. Position requires ability to remain on feet for long periods of time, climb stairs, bend and stoop. Position requires no impairment of sight, smell, hearing, touch, balance, and agility of movement, which might interfere with ability to work. Position requires a valid motor vehicle operator's license. WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is typically performed in an assigned office as well as spaces allocated for educational functions both in and out of doors, on and off zoo grounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

RELATIONSHIPS:
Internal: Daily with employees and volunteers
External: Frequently with visitors, program participants, parents and community service workers

DECISION MAKING:
Decisions related to task priorities.

SUPERVISION:
Broad considerable latitude is given to the position to carry out the work objectives and determine the best method for dealing with situations that arise.

EMOTIONAL:
High. Frequent short deadlines. Hectic work environment with occasional periods of high stress.

SKILLS NEEDED:
Knowledge of managing people, dealing professionally and effectively with all types of people.
Knowledge of record keeping.
Knowledge of the principles and practices of volunteer training and supervision.
Skill in producing, coordinating volunteer programs, projects, activities and events that enhance the visitor experience.
Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with teachers, zoo staff, volunteers and the public.
Skill in efficiently utilizing volunteers and available resources to accomplish departmental goals and objectives.
Ability to respond effectively to education related inquires as well as present effective formal and informal presentations on zoo educational matters.
Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing to a broad spectrum audience.
Knowledge and familiarity with appropriate computer software and hardware.
Skill in making informational presentations regarding zoo educational programs.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's Degree suggested
Experience and familiarity in working at a public attraction venue
Experience in customer service
Experience in communicating with all types of personalities

Other specifics include:
Part time position up to 30 hours per week, no benefits

Must be willing to work Saturday and Sunday every week.

Must be willing to work the second Tuesday of every month 9 am - 9 pm.
