Bricklayers Pre-Apprenticeship Training

Local Union 15 MO/KS Apprenticeship and Training annually offers a Pre-Apprenticeship training program sponsored by the IMI (International Masonry Institute).

Each year, new apprentices are needed to keep up with the workforce demands and replace those who have reached retirement age. As with any career in today's competitive job market, employers are looking for employees that are responsible, dependable, hard working, and have a desire to learn. Add to that, the basic skills and knowledge of the craft through Pre-Apprenticeship Training, you will be the employee our contractors are looking for.

The purpose of this Pre-Apprentice training is two-fold: One, it gives a young person who would like to be a bricklayer a chance to get the tools and materials of the trade in their hands. After a few weeks with our instructors (who by the way are Journeyman Bricklayers with years of experience) in our training center you will have the basic skills and knowledge of the bricklaying trade to be confident and also productive the first day on the job.

Two, it will provide our contractors with quality apprentices that know how to use their tools, are familiar with the materials and the processes pertaining to the masonry trade. Contractors would rather hire an apprentice that has some previous experience than one that has no knowledge of the trade at all.

What does it cost? It's free; in fact, you will receive a $50.00 per week stipend. Also, you will be provided a set of tools that you will keep once you complete the training.

What happens after I complete this training? We are only accepting enough applicants to fulfill our workforce demands for the next twelve months. The exact number will be under review up until the interview process.

Near the end of the training session, we will be contacting our contractors and assisting you with employment. Once employed, you will become a registered apprentice in the BAC Local 15 MO/KS Apprenticeship & Training program.

What are the starting wages and benefits? As of April 2008, in the Kansas City Area, a 57% Apprentice earns $17.58 per hour plus a $7.69 benefit package. (Benefits include; health, eye, dental, prescriptions and pension benefits) Annual wage increases take effect April 1st of each year. What is the length of the program? Compared to other programs it is very short, only eight weeks. There are a few vocational schools that offer a masonry program that are one or two year programs. These programs also require tuition. The 2009 Program begins March 23, and ends May 15, 2009.

Where does this training take place? At Builders Association Training Center 105W. 12th Ave, North Kansas City MO. Or at one of our other Training facilities as needed. Times will be from 7:30 a.m. till 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

How do I apply? The minimum requirements are as follows: must be physically capable of performing the work, provide copy of your high school diploma/GED equivalency, provide a copy of birth certificate, and have a valid driver's license.

Applications will be taken March 2 , thru March 11, 2009. Interviews will be conducted March 16, 2009, at the Builders Association Education & Training Center, 105 W 12th Ave, North Kansas City Mo, 64116. (If selected must take a drug test prior to training). Please contact Christina Colclough at 816-595-4138 to schedule an appointment.

The recruiting selection and training of apprentices shall be without discrimination because of race, color, age, religion, national origin, disability or gender.
